Networking & CPAs - An unlikely but successful possibility!

In my 20-plus years in the accounting profession, I heard many times “You are the first CPA I’ve met who has a personality.” I used to simply laugh it off. But as time went on, I realized that this perception was reality for many people. CPA’s are considered to be highly-introverted number-crunchers that are lacking in people skills. NETWORKING & CPA’s – AN UNLIKELY BUT SUCCESSFUL POSSIBILITY

By David A. Crumbaugh, CPA, Co-Founder Nspired Networking Enterprises, LLC - July 2015

If a picture is worth a thousand words…

The reality is CPAs may be all of those things, and yet we can be great networkers too! It takes getting out from behind the desk and attending events. It requires talking to our clients to ask how else we can help them. It involves communicating with our clients to educate them on how they can help us. Being a great networker means being more of a resource for our clients than ever before.

Building the skills to be a great networker may sometimes put us outside our comfort zone. One way that CPAs can become stronger networkers is to implement a networking plan at your firm that involves the entire staff - from administrative personnel to partners - who are all engaged in networking activities together. At one of my previous firms, we formed a committee that met regularly to practice our skills and even discussed books on networking topics. Together, we developed a plan to help our staff identify and seek out our ideal clients and grow our practice.

So to CPA’s (and other professionals) who believe you’ll have no success at networking, I’m here to challenge you. Get out there and work your network! You can have success, if you put intention and effort into it daily.
